Nowcasting of lightnings - Radar and lightning image
pictures of precipitation and forecast of lightning activity in the next 30 minutes
The image represent the distribution of the precipitations and a short time-range extimation of the area interested by lightning activity.

Precipitations: the measure represented in the maps is the reflectivity, that is the fraction of energy reflected by hydrometeora and returning to the Radar Antenna. The unity used for the reflectivity is the Decibel, also called dBz. To give an idea we can consider that 23 dBz are equivalent to 1 millimeter/hour for precipitation intensity; the intensity will double every 5 dBz. In case of thunderstorms the reflectivity increases to values like 50 dBz, but can exceed 60 dBz in presence of hail.
Lightnings recorded: the recorded lightnings are sketched with coloured symbols; the colour represents the time since the registration, and the referring legend in minutes is on the top-right of the image.
Lightnings forecast: the coloured contours represent the area interested by lightning in the following half hour; yellow contour indicates a light risk, orange a medium risk, red an high risk of lightning verification.
